Who should be contacted first when arranging a funeral?
The undertaker. As they will be making most of the arrangements for the funeral, talking to them first will save you time and possible distress at such a difficult time.
You do not need a death certificate if the burial is in Ireland.

If the death takes place in Hospital. The hospital will register the death, and the registrar’s office at the hospital will be able to tell you where you can obtain the certificate.

If the death takes place in the home; the attending Doctor will issue a ‘Cause of Death Certificate’ which you then take to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Yes. You can have any type of funeral you wish. There is no obligation to have a service of any kind.
Is it possible to delay the funeral?
With today’s modern embalming techniques, a funeral can now be delayed for a considerable length of time.

Do I have to contact the church?
No, the undertaker will contact the Church for you, the priest will then contact you regarding your wishes for readings etc.
Can we have a funeral without the church being involved?
What is a Post Mortem/Autopsy?
Where a deceased has not been attending a Doctor or there is no history of illness it will be necessary to perform a post mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
Can I object to a Post Mortem?
If the post mortem has been ordered by the Coroner, you cannot object or stop it from taking place. If the Hospital authorities ask your permission to perform a post mortem, you are entitled to refuse provided that the Doctor is willing to issue a ‘Cause of Death Certificate’.
Do I have to pay the Church, cemetery fees, organist etc?
This is optional, but it is best to leave all the payments to the undertaker, they will then give you an itemised bill after the funeral.
Will we have to pay for the funeral immediately?
No, the funeral account will not be sent out until after the funeral. If you find that you can not make payment in one lump sum, we will be happy to talk with you about the option of a payment plan.
